The huge fire that broke out yesterday, which destroyed and partially collapsed a warehouse in the German port of Hamburg, was finally extinguished by firefighters today, officials reported, quoted by DPA, writes BTA.

Around 120 firefighters were extinguishing the last fires and embers, but the large fire at the scene was extinguished.

"The fire in the large hall has now been extinguished", a fire department spokesman told DPA at noon.

It was expected to take longer to completely extinguish the fire and it is still too dangerous to approach the center of the fire, which was reportedly caused by a burning car in the warehouse, DPA notes.

"There were further explosions caused by pressurized gas containers," the spokesman said, while the area remained cordoned off.

Police investigators were also unable to begin work at the scene due to the continued presence of toxic gases.

Six people were initially confirmed injured in the fire that broke out yesterday afternoon in the "Wedel" district in the southeast of Hamburg. One of them is in critical condition and a second is seriously injured, DPA reported.

In addition, three firefighters were injured in the explosion and a driver was injured by flying debris on the A1 motorway. Twenty-five people were rescued from the area, some by boat.

In addition to the immediate danger from the fire, gas cylinders stored in the warehouse exploded for several hours, some of which were thrown several hundred meters into the air and caused additional fires in the surrounding area.
