German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned of a possible strengthening of sanctions against Russia if the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky does not take place in the near future. This was stated by Friedrich Merz at a press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Focus reports.

"Together we expressed hope that a meeting between Zelensky and Putin will take place within two weeks... If such a meeting does not take place, as agreed between Trump (US President) and Putin, then the ball will again end up in our court, I mean the Europeans and the Americans“, Merz stated.

The Chancellor emphasizes that in the event of a failure of the meeting, the US and European countries will be forced to meet again to discuss further actions.

One of the options in such a case, according to him, is to strengthen sanctions against Russia.
