US President Donald Trump will chair a "major meeting" on the Gaza Strip at the White House today, his special envoy Steve Witkoff announced, quoted by Agence France-Presse and BTA.
Witkoff told "Fox News" that the Trump administration is developing a "very detailed plan" for the post-war future of the Palestinian territory. "I think a lot of people will be convinced how solid and well-intentioned (the plan, which) reflects the humanitarian motives of the (US) president is", he added, without giving further details.
Witkoff predicted that the war in Gaza would end by the end of this year.
The US State Department, meanwhile, reported, quoted by Reuters, that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would meet Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar in Washington today.
In February, Trump proposed that the US take control of Gaza to rebuild it and turn it into the "Riviera of the Middle East" after its inhabitants are evicted, AFP recalls. He suggested that the population of the strip could be transferred to Egypt and Jordan. Welcomed by the Israeli far right, this idea was rejected by Arab and most Western countries, with the UN warning of "ethnic cleansing" in Gaza.
