Bulgaria will protect its energy independence, said Toshko Yordanov, MP from “There is such a people“ (ITN) and deputy head of the delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (PACE). We will protect our people, our jobs and our power plants, he added, quoted by the party's press center, reported by BTA.

Yordanov participated in the Energy panel of the Interparliamentary Conference on the Common Foreign and Security Policy within the framework of the Danish Presidency of the European Union (EU).

According to Toshko Yordanov, in Copenhagen we are talking about critical infrastructure, energy and sustainability, which are not abstract words, but are the backbone of our societies.

According to Yordanov, Europe needs a Green Deal, but the deal we have now is unfair, unbalanced and unstable.

He gives the example of Bulgaria and adds that if the coal-fired power plants in the Maritsa basin are closed, the country's contribution to reducing European emissions will be 0.02%. But in return, we will destroy 40% of our electricity production, adds Yordanov.

According to Toshko Yordanov, this is not climate policy, but national suicide.

Bulgaria has already achieved results. At the end of the last century, our emissions were 105 million tons, and today they are 42 million. This is a 60% reduction. The big goal of the European Union in 5 years is a 55% reduction, the MP also says.

We in Bulgaria have already done it. We are not catch-ups, we are pioneers! But we are expected to destroy our energy independence, destroy our industries, leave thousands of families without jobs. And all this in the name of symbolic results that will not change the global climate, he adds.

The conference was attended by the chairwoman of the parliamentary social committee Denitsa Sacheva, the chairwoman of the defense committee Hristo Gadzhev, and the MP from "DPS - New Beginning" Stanislav Anastasov.
