The Israeli military said that starting Friday, a local humanitarian pause in military activity would not apply to the Gaza City area because it "represents a dangerous combat zone".

Israel's security cabinet has approved a plan to take control of Gaza City, a move that expands military operations in the devastated Palestinian territory that has drawn strong criticism at home and abroad for waging a nearly two-year war.

Last month, Israel announced a 10-hour daily pause in military operations in parts of Gaza and new aid corridors, with Jordan and the United Arab Emirates airdropping supplies into the enclave.

The Israeli military said on Friday that "will continue to support humanitarian efforts, along with ongoing maneuvers and offensive operations against terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip, to defend the State of Israel".

Israel has faced growing international criticism, which the government rejects, over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and indirect ceasefire talks in Doha between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas have broken off with no agreement in sight.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the war will not end until Hamas is disarmed.

The war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants invaded southern Israel, killing 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking 251 hostages back to Gaza, according to Israeli figures.

Since then, the Israeli The offensive has killed more than 62,000 people in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to Gaza health officials, reduced much of the enclave to rubble and displaced almost the entire population.
