Over 1,000 people have died in a landslide in a village in the Sudanese Darfur region, a Sudanese rebel group that controls the area said, quoted by the AP, BTA reported.

This is one of the worst natural disasters in the country so far. According to the rebels, the village was "completely wiped off the face of the earth". The tragedy unfolded on Sunday in the village of Tarasin, in Central Darfur, after several days of torrential rains.

The leader of the group, Abdel Wahid Nur, appealed to the international community and the United Nations for urgent help, as "the disaster is serious and it would be difficult to describe in words."

The government's Sovereign Council of Sudan expressed condolences for the deaths of the residents and announced that all possible resources had been mobilized to help the area.

A local farmer said that the rainfall had been extremely intense in recent weeks, and the area around Tarasin was the hardest hit. "The village and its inhabitants simply disappeared. This is a tragedy like we have never experienced before," he said.

The village is located in the central part of the Mara Mountains, a volcanic massif whose highest peak reaches over 3,000 meters. The region, recognized as part of the World Natural Heritage, is characterized by lower temperatures and significantly higher rainfall compared to surrounding areas.
