BRICS countries to hold emergency meeting on September 8 over US tariffs and sanctions

It is organized at the initiative of Brazilian President Lula da Silva

Chinese President Xi Jinping will participate in an emergency BRICS summit via videoconference scheduled for September 8, the Brazilian newspaper O Globo reported, citing Celso Amorim, a senior adviser to the Brazilian president.

As the diplomat noted after his visit to Beijing, Xi Jinping “has confirmed his participation” in the BRICS summit. Amorim also met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The parties discussed preparations for the community leaders' meeting, the conflict in Ukraine and the new global governance initiative that the Chinese leader announced at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit held in Tianjin. Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the initiative "very timely and positive".

The extraordinary BRICS summit will be organized at the initiative of Brazilian President Lula da Silva.

Earlier, sources in the Brazilian leadership confirmed to the newspaper “Correio Braziliense“ that the meeting of BRICS leaders is scheduled for September 8. As noted by the CNN Brasil television channel, the Brazilian leader intends to discuss with partners from the community the threats to the multipolar world order, as well as the bloc's common response to US tariff measures and sanctions.
