Planning for the construction of the second and third nuclear power plants in Kazakhstan should begin today. This was stated by the President of the Republic Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in his address to the people.
„We must now start planning the construction of the second and even third nuclear power plants. At a recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, an agreement was reached on a strategic partnership between our countries in the nuclear industry,“ he said, speaking in parliament. Tokayev recalled that a month ago, construction of the first nuclear power plant began in Kazakhstan with the participation of Rosatom. “This is probably not enough for stable economic growth“, he noted.
According to the president, the “fundamental“ course of the republic is the development of nuclear energy. “Kazakhstan is ready to cooperate with all world companies on a mutually beneficial basis, which is consistent with the goal of ensuring our energy sovereignty,” he emphasized.
In June, the Atomic Energy Agency of Kazakhstan named China's CNNC as a possible leader of the consortium for the construction of another nuclear power plant in the republic, warning that negotiations with Beijing would still be ongoing. “Rosatom“ was chosen as the leader of the consortium for the construction of the first nuclear power plant, since this state corporation presented the most optimal proposal.
