Pig heads have appeared outside several mosques in Paris, authorities said, condemning the act as an insult to Muslims, Reuters reported.

France has the largest Muslim population in Europe - more than 6 million people, for whom pigs are considered unclean.

“An investigation was immediately launched“, Paris police chief Laurent Nunes said in “Aix“. “Everything possible is being done to find those responsible for these vile acts.“

The Paris prosecutor's office said the pig heads were found outside at least two mosques in Paris and one just outside the city limits. A pig's head was also found in a suitcase outside a mosque in the northern part of the French capital.

The word "Macron" was written in blue on one of the spots, prosecutors added, an apparent reference to French President Emmanuel Macron, whose attention is currently absorbed by a political and fiscal crisis, Reuters notes.

Paris police have launched an investigation into incitement to hatred and discrimination.

Interior Minister Bruno Rotayo condemned the actions. "I want our Muslim compatriots to be able to practice their faith in peace," he said. "I understand that they feel hurt."
