Russia is monitoring Belgium's position on frozen Russian assets, Reuters reported, citing a statement by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, BTA reported.

"If the European Union proceeds to steal Russian assets, the consequences for the entire global financial system will be extremely negative. This will not remain without consequences for those who participate in such a crime," Zakharova stressed. "We will react strictly to any hostile actions related to attempts to deprive Russia of the right of ownership of its sovereign assets," she added.

Earlier this week, in an interview with the British newspaper "Financial Times" Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevost said Belgium was ready to accept a change in the way the EU treats 190 billion euros worth of infected Russian assets blocked on its territory in order to help Ukraine, provided that the legal risks are shared among the bloc's member states.
