Great Wall Motor's new flagship rewrites the rules for hybrid SUVs - 1

While the world looks around for the next generation of electric crossovers, Chinese giant Great Wall Motor decided to show what true heavyweight power means. On March 30, 2026, pre-sales of the updated Tank 700 Hi4-Z will officially start - a car that not only looks aggressive, but literally dominates the space around it. The company's chairman, Wei Jianjong, personally got behind the wheel in Shanghai to demonstrate the capabilities of his flagship in real time.

Visually, the new Tank 700 Hi4-Z is a real “monster“ in the good sense of the word. The designers have relied on the aesthetics of the “virgin land”, combined with modern technological accents. The front part has received a massive mesh grille and a new hood with functional air intakes, which hint at the serious potential under it. The exclusive color “Dunhuang Green“ further emphasizes the premium ambitions of the model, and the expanded fender arches and huge 21-inch black wheels complete the image of an uncompromising SUV.

However, the real revolution lies under the shell. Hi4-Z technology is the heart of this colossus. The hybrid system combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with a power of 248 hp and a highly efficient electrified transmission. The big news is the huge battery with a capacity of 59.05 kWh. For comparison - this is a capacity that we often find in all-electric city cars, but here it serves to provide an impressive 190 km of electric-only range (on the WLTC cycle). This makes the Tank 700 ideal for silent city driving, while the average consumption of 8.45 l per 100 km is more than decent for a machine with a length of over 5 meters and a weight capable of towing a 2.5-ton trailer.

The interior is a classic combination of the digital age and off-road practicality. While the driver has a huge central display and the latest generation of lidar on the roof for autonomous driving, physical buttons are reserved for important functions - a detail that any true off-road enthusiast will appreciate. Rear passengers enjoy “airplane” comfort with a screen on the ceiling and adjustable backrests, turning even the toughest terrain into a cozy place to travel.

With a wheelbase of 3000 mm and increased ground clearance, the Tank 700 Hi4-Z makes a clear statement: it is not afraid of mud, but prefers to be parked in front of the entrance of a five-star hotel. The problem for Europeans and, accordingly, for the native GWM fans is that at this stage the Chinese will not offer this "luxury monster" in Europe, but there is a chance that other new models from the Tank brand will set foot on native soil.
