The integration of Alpina into the structure of BMW is starting to bear its first and rather curious fruits. After more than half a century as an independent tuning master, the legendary brand from Buchloe is now charting new horizons under the wing of the Bavarian giant. The hottest news in automotive circles is the registration of the trademark XB6 - an index that suggests that Alpina is preparing to cross its own boundaries and reach for a model that it has so far stubbornly avoided.
All signs point to the BMW X6. Until now, Alpina has stayed away from the “father” of SUV-coupés, so as not to enter the territory of the aggressive M-divisions. However, new market realities are changing the rules. According to the brand's nomenclature, the letter “B” in the name XB6 leaves no room for doubt – a serious petrol engine will be roaring under the hood. This is an interesting change, given the fact that with the smaller X4 the company opted for diesel to avoid a direct duel with the X4 M.
With Alpina becoming an official division of BMW, the strategy seems increasingly clear: while the M-cars will continue to pursue extreme track performance and uncompromising toughness, Alpina will occupy the niche of “ultra-fast everyday gentlemen“. These are cars that offer crushing power, but wrapped in exceptional comfort and refinement – something that X6 customers have long been looking for.
Technically speaking, the path ahead of the XB6 has already been trodden by its bigger brother, the XB7. Since the X6 and X7 share much of their architecture, engineers will likely use the familiar 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8. Power is expected to be in the region of an impressive 631 hp, which will turn the future crossover into a real highway rocket.
The patent registration does not yet mean that we will see the car in showrooms tomorrow, but it is a clear signal of the direction in which the alliance between Munich and Buchloe is taking. The BMW X6 is one of the brand's most popular models, and an Alpina version would be the perfect end to the range for those who want speed without unnecessary racing drama. Bavaria is preparing for a new era in which luxury and power will speak the same language.
