Ford is considering launching a line of "authentic" versions of the Mustang with internal combustion engines. If it gets the "green light", the popular 60-year-old gasoline coupe will have a four-door version for the first time in history.
This information came from not just anyone, but Ford CEO Jim Farley, who shared it in an exclusive interview with Autocar. According to him, the four-door Mustang has a right to exist if it retains the character of the original.
But before moving on to the latest phase of family expansion, Ford needs to start by polishing the original coupe in all its guises. As an example, Farley cites Porsche with its 911 GT3 RS and GT2 RS models.
The head of Ford believes that the company has an opportunity to make the Mustang more affordable, lighter and more productive. Developments in this direction are already underway. He called the recently announced GTD version an "initial contribution" about the future performance of the Mustang.
Such a sports car with a power of 800 hp. with a complex aerodynamic package and a price of 304 thousand dollars has already passed the Nürburgring tests. At the same time, the company's plans do not include turning the Mustang into an SUV, as Porsche did.
Farley has promised sports car fans that he will "fight hard" to keep the iconic V8 engines and manual gearboxes. But future Mustangs will most likely be hybrids.
