The United States may ban the driving of Chinese electric cars. “The Smart“ technologies that are packed into modern Chinese cars can collect and transmit data to China, including the military, US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo told the House of Representatives. In this regard, it is proposed to either interfere with their software or completely remove it from American roads.
It is not yet clear whether “batteries“ Chinese cars or a way will be found to monitor the “smart“ electronics, but this issue is already being discussed at a high level. In any case, all data collected from electric cars must be stored in the United States, Raimondo noted.
She also recalled that China is already restricting the use of electric cars made in the US - Tesla in particular. Back in 2021, Chinese authorities privately asked employees of state-owned companies not to drive Teslas to their workplaces, and not to drive them in areas where national security officials live. The use of Tesla was prohibited on the territory of military complexes, hospitals and airports.
The reason was similar: it was claimed that electric cars could collect photo and video material, data about routes and car owners for the purpose of handing them over to the US government.
The news of a new tightening of policies on Chinese cars followed the decision to raise tariffs from 25 to 100 percent. After the USA, Europe also decided to increase tariffs, but not so drastically. And, as we know, Europe is a much more important market for producers of “green“ cars from China.
