Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in the European Union from 2035 makes no sense. This is reported by Politico.
In her speech to the Italian parliament, she emphasized that reducing emissions is “the way we want to go, but it must be done with common sense”.
„The green perspective is pursued even at the cost of sacrificing entire industries and industrial sectors, such as the automotive industry,”, added Giorgia Meloni, criticizing the measures which she believes would condemn Europe to new strategic dependencies, giving the example of Chinese electric cars .
The head of the Italian government noted that to argue otherwise was "simply ideological madness," which she promised to try to correct. The Prime Minister also promised to “review the most ideological rules within the framework of the Green Deal and ensure technological neutrality”.
„Reducing pollution should not be at the expense of economic and social stability, but at the expense of protecting and promoting European production and preserving tens of thousands of jobs, Meloni is convinced.
She assured that no one has ever denied that electric vehicles can be part of the solution to the decarbonisation of transport. “But we want to protect nature together with people”, the prime minister summed up and pointed out that “in recent years, the exact opposite happened and human activity was too often considered harmful to nature”.
