Volkswagen halts Polo production in Europe - 1

The German carmaker has halted production of the Polo compact hatchback in Europe to focus on its new all-electric models. However, Polo production will continue in South Africa.

Interestingly, Polo production in Europe stops after 40 years. The model was last assembled in Pamplona, Spain, but will now be produced exclusively in Carieza, South Africa.

At the same time, the Spanish plant will undergo a reconstruction focused on the assembly of two new small electric vehicles. As reported by Carscoops, one of them will be VW-branded and the other will be a Skoda model.

Auto News reports that both cars will use a shortened, front-wheel-drive version of the current MEB platform, which is used in many other Volkswagen Group models.

The new ID.2all from Volkswagen will sit below the ID.3 in the current range. A version of this electric car will be offered and produced alongside the related Cupra Raval at the brand's plant in Martorella, Spain.

At the same time, a small Skoda electric SUV, which will be called the Epiq and is expected to have a starting price of up to 25,000 euros, will be the second vehicle to be made at the converted plant that previously made the Polo .

Regardless of the changes, the Polo subcompact car will continue to be sold in Europe. Now the cars will just come from afar. Assembly of the small city cars is reserved exclusively for the Volkswagen plant in South Africa.
