The Russian brand "Volga" seems to be on its way back, and this time, like Moskvich, it will rely on cooperation with a Chinese partner. According to information on the Telegram channel "Russian Automobile etc.", the revived cars will be developed jointly with Geely. This development comes after in the spring of 2025, the company JSC "Production of Passenger Cars" announced the continuation of the project to produce a new Volga.
According to the source, a Volga office will soon be opened in Moscow, and the staff has already been hired. The presentation of the new project is also expected.
We recall that the Volga line of cars was presented to the Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Mikhail Mishustin on May 21 last year. All models were equipped with a 188 hp (300 Nm) gasoline engine and a seven-speed automatic transmission. However, these prototypes never went into mass production.
It was initially announced that production would begin in 2024 at the Nizhny Novgorod Automobile Cluster site. Full-cycle assembly was planned to begin in 2025. According to the Izvestia publication, last year's prototypes were based on cars from the Chinese company Changan.
The investment in the project to produce the new Volga cars is expected to exceed 60 billion rubles, according to the brand's press service. Cooperation with Geely can provide the necessary technological base and experience for the successful implementation of the project.
With this move, Volga hopes to adapt to modern market conditions and restore its place in the automotive market, combining a classic name with modern Chinese technologies.
