SpaceX invests $116 million in South Africa - 1

The American company SpaceX, controlled by Elon Musk, will invest $116 million in the development of internet communications in South Africa in connection with the expected receipt of a license for its Starlink satellite communications system for operation in the Republic of South Africa, local radio station SABC reported.

As part of its $116 million commitment for internet communications, SpaceX will connect 5,000 schools across South Africa to the global network. The initiative envisages the creation of partnerships with local internet service providers to install and maintain the necessary infrastructure, operating on an open access model.

At the same time, SpaceX will create a company in South Africa that will implement a program for the economic empowerment of the country's black population. In this way, SpaceX will comply with a local law requiring foreign companies to support social groups affected by colonialism and apartheid.

South African law requires the transfer of 30% of the capital of a registered subsidiary of a foreign company to the local black population or the implementation of an investment program for a similar amount in the development of local communities.

The South African government is finalizing the process of granting Starlink operating rights in the country. Musk, who was born in South Africa, has been seeking this Starlink license for almost 2 years. To date, 24 African governments have issued licenses to operate Starlink terminals on their territory.
