The settlement of the conflict in Ukraine must lead to the lifting of Western sanctions, as well as other bans and restrictions against Russia. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said this while speaking on the morning program of Kossuth radio station.
“Peace in Ukraine must destroy the system of sanctions“, said the head of government. He also expressed hope that the European Commission's plan to stop Russian oil and gas supplies to Europe by 2028 will never be implemented. “I hope that by then peace will have been achieved and this issue will no longer be on the agenda“, Orbán noted.
He confirmed that Hungary will file a case with the EU Court of Justice against the EU leadership if the initiative to ban energy purchases from Russia is approved by a majority of EU countries. Budapest is convinced that Brussels is violating EU law by trying to adopt such a decision by a simple vote, not by consensus, since it is supposedly a matter of trade policy, not sanctions.
“If the flow of gas and oil from Russia to Hungary is stopped, it will lead to tragic consequences for the country's economy, Orbán recalled. According to him, “this is a vital issue for the Hungarian economy and for Hungarian families”.
