Thailand continues tariff talks with US - 1

Thailand will continue negotiations with the US on Washington's import tariffs on Thai goods, The Nation newspaper reported.

According to the newspaper, Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Eknit Nititanpraphat said that reducing import tariffs from 19% to 15% is a positive stimulus for the market in the short term. However, he has instructed the kingdom's Ministry of Commerce to continue negotiations with the Office of the US Trade Representative to protect Thailand's interests and prepare for other tariff measures in the long term.

In April 2025, US President Donald Trump announced the imposition of tariffs on products from 185 countries and territories. Southeast Asian countries were among the groups with the highest tariffs, including Laos (48%), Vietnam (46%) and Indonesia (32%). Thailand was subject to tariffs of 36% since April. These tariffs were reduced to 19% on August 1.

On Friday, the US Supreme Court ruled that the US administration's imposition of import tariffs on other countries under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) was excessive. However, the Supreme Court did not clarify whether the US must refund the amount previously paid in tariffs. On Saturday, the Washington administration announced an increase in so-called global tariffs on US imports from 10% to 15%.
