According to people close to Trump, facilitating agreements between conflicting countries is in line with the Republican policy of “America first“, as he seeks to tie peace agreements to trade agreements, as is the case with Armenia and Azerbaijan.
According to an official in the Washington administration, Trump likes the role of peacemaker. He is convinced that he is achieving deals that his predecessors have failed to agree on, and demonstrates "strength and insight" without paying attention to the actual success of the agreements.
