Varna may hold snap elections for mayor - 1

The Municipal Council in Varna will act strictly according to the law in the event of partial local elections or the appointment of a new acting mayor. This was stated by the chairman of the local parliament Hristo Dimitrov in the program "Position" on Radio Varna. According to him, holding snap elections for the mayor of the seaside capital is a possible option given the ongoing arrest of the current mayor Blagomir Kotsev.

"The Municipal Council in Varna will act according to the law if partial local elections are held or a new acting mayor is appointed," said Hristo Dimitrov. He stressed that holding early mayoral elections in Varna is a real scenario in the current situation.

The situation in the seaside capital remains complicated after the Sofia Court of Appeal ruled over two months ago that Blagomir Kotsev should remain in custody. The mayor of Varna has been detained since July 8, 2025 and is accused of participating in an organized crime group, corruption practices and crimes in office.

Hristo Dimitrov also commented on the problems with cleanliness in Varna, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to solving them.

"The administration must work intensively with the company that is engaged in garbage collection and disposal. Sanctions alone are not enough. A lot of work is also needed with the citizens themselves, because to a large extent we, the residents of Varna, also create some of the waste problems," the chairman of the municipal council pointed out.

Regarding the financial situation of the municipal carrier "Gradski Transport", Dimitrov informed that thanks to the loan granted, the company has stabilized its financial situation.

Hristo Dimitrov also announced that competitions for managers of all municipal companies in Varna are due by the end of the year, which is part of the efforts to improve the work of municipal enterprises.
