MEP Radan Kanev wrote a letter to the EPP that the institutions in our country have been “taken over and hijacked“.
“This has been my impression for a long time about a process of rapid degradation of the rule of law in our country, which leads to the feeling that public political processes do not decide what is happening in Bulgaria. That what is happening is decided at an invisible level“, said Radan Kanev in “Face to Face“.
“This is not happening only in Bulgaria. It is not a unique process, but it is extremely worrying and the consequences are always very severe on national security, on the economy, and on the life and security of every citizen“, commented Kanev.
According to him, Bulgaria is clearly failing in one of its two most important tasks - to guarantee the rule of law and that the law is applied equally to everyone.
He explained that the specific reason for the letter is the arrest and continued detention of the mayor of Varna, Blagomir Kotsev.
“Things seem very deeply rotten and against all rules of Bulgarian law. At the moment, in this case, apart from political arbitrariness and repression of one person, nothing has actually happened. At some point we will find ourselves in the absurd situation where this case will be returned to the Varna Prosecutor's Office and it will have to start everything from scratch just to establish that there is practically no evidence of a crime“, commented Kanev.
“Regardless of what happens in the Bulgarian parliament and the Bulgarian government, in the end what Delyan Peevski wants happens. The interesting thing is what goes on behind this figure and how it happens that parties that are much larger than “DPS-New Beginning“ comply with his every whim“, the MEP also said.
Radan Kanev believes that illegitimate circles are taking control of GERB, referring to Delyan Peevski.
“This is a very big risk for the entire democracy. On top of all that, we are talking about a party that is a member of the main center-right family in Europe. This is already dealing a very heavy blow to Bulgaria's European orientation,“ believes Radan Kanev.
According to him, GERB has no instinct for self-preservation.
