The first snow fell on Vitosha, but at the moment the situation is calm, there are no reports of complications or problems with traffic. This was announced on his “Facebook“ Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev.
“We have ordered sanding and are monitoring the situation. Access to Vitosha is extremely important for me and my team, because the mountain is a place for recreation, sports and escape from the city noise for thousands of Sofia residents“, emphasized Terziev.
According to him, the quick and adequate reaction is the result of the reform introduced last winter in the organization and control of snow removal. Among the highlights of the changes, the mayor highlights:
increased control and strict sanctions for contractor companies - payment only upon completion of work;
increased requirements for equipment and more frequent road maintenance;
nighttime cleaning of the roads to the “Aleko“ and “Zlatnite mostove“ huts;
closer coordination between the Municipal Police, the Mountaineering and Hiking Center, ski schools and hut owners;
preventive removal of dangerously overhanging trees.
“We are actively working to improve access and to implement an overall vision for Vitosha. "Our goal is for the mountain to be safe and accessible to all residents of Sofia year-round," said Terziev.
He also appealed to drivers heading to the mountain to be fully equipped for winter conditions - with winter tires and chains - and to comply with the recommendations of the authorities on the ground.
