Petko Petkov: The presidency has been going beyond its constitutional framework for a long time. The National Assembly made the right decision - 1

The Parliament has made the right decision by finally taking away the president's authority to appoint the heads of the special services - DAR, DANS and DATO. This was stated by the executive director of “Gallup International“ Petko Petkov on the air of “Denyat na Zievo“ on Nova News.

The presidency has been going beyond its constitutional framework for a long time. If it had not gone in this direction, perhaps the current confrontation would not have occurred“, the sociologist commented.

According to him, the conflict between the institutions has deepened and the National Assembly has the full right to delegate the election of heads of key security structures. According to him, this is part of the normal political process, although it creates tension.

Petkov emphasized that conflicts between institutions should not be carried out on display, especially when it comes to national security and the interests of the state.

“Politicians often forget this and use institutional clashes to accumulate personal political dividends. However, this later played a bad joke on them in front of the voters“, he also said.

The expert was categorical that if President Rumen Radev had not adopted such an openly political line in his positions, the reactions from the National Assembly would not have been so harsh.

Petkov also commented on Delyan Peevski's proposal to close the Anti-Corruption Commission: “In my opinion, the majority will gather the votes for the closure, but the topic will not be brought up for discussion immediately. This will happen when the time comes.“

According to him, the main political forces – GERB, DPS and PP-DB – see the commission as an ineffective structure and agree that it should be abolished or restructured.

Petkov also commented on the disastrous situation on the Black Sea coast after the floods: “Bulgaria is already entering climatic conditions where the question is not whether there will be floods, but how the state will deal with their consequences. The main problem is the management of waste, which contributes to the damage in disasters.“
