What are the causes of the floods on the Southern Black Sea Coast? Scientists from the National University Center for Geospatial Research and Technology presented models of tidal waves in Tsarevo and "Elenite". In both places - there are three critical points, bTV reports.
In the case of "Elenite" - an illegal landfill, the underground tunnel into which the river is channeled, as well as the "Negresco" apartment complex.
The situation is similar in Tsarevo. There, three bridges along the river form dams and block the path of the water, flooding houses and properties.
Using drones, scientists from Sofia University are taking photogeometric photographs of the submerged resorts. Kristiyan Georgiev is one of the team of scientists.
"The devices themselves fly along pre-set routes that cover the territory of the watersheds," he commented.
The data collected from the flights show which are the critical points.
"From a photo on "Google" we immediately saw that there was some kind of landfill here. It is 16 meters high, 109 thousand cubic meters. "Look how much it narrows the riverbed," says Assoc. Prof. Steliyan Dimitrov from the Center for Geospatial Research and Technology.
The scientists also refute the claim of the complex's management that the underground tunnel into which the river is brought is 20 meters.
"This collector, which takes the water into the sea, is 9 meters wide - it's not 20 meters", says Assoc. Prof. Steliyan Dimitrov.
"The third main reason is this apartment complex "Negresco", which also plays the role of a dam. Look where the water collects - between the landfill, the collector and "Negresco", he adds.
In the water apocalypse in Tsarevo - for the second time in the last three years - three bridges are the cause.
"Here are the three obstacles. Here is another underground facility that is not well calculated, because you can see how much debris there is. At the moment when it got clogged, the water overflowed from this side, reached the next obstacle, and there was another blockage. From there it has already reached the last bridge, where all these sediments have settled and the water has gone into the sea", commented Assoc. Prof. Steliyan Dimitrov.
The university's center for geospatial research emphasizes that they have been collecting data for years, but no institution has taken it into account in flood prevention plans or in the construction of infrastructure.
