The proposal for a two-year break between terms of office of the head of state is a generally valid and widely applicable measure in democratic countries. This was stated on Nova TV by the leader of the UDF, Rumen Hristov. He gave the example of France, where all former presidents become members of the Constitutional Council and retain a number of privileges, powers and immunities.
“Sooner or later, a similar practice will be imposed in our country,“ said Hristov.
Hristov was categorical that the country should not enter a new political cycle and early elections. “Now we need a stable government in view of our transition to the eurozone. We are giving the government a four-year horizon and we have no reason to go to elections“, he said.
Regarding the appointment of Rumen Spetsov as special manager of “Lukoil Bulgaria“, Hristov said that he does not know him personally, but he appreciates his actions so far: “Judging by his work - he is doing his job and has data to prove it. I am convinced that he will cope.“ He added that regardless of who they would appoint, “We Continue Change - Democratic Bulgaria” “would criticize the decision“.
Hristov emphasized that the main goal of the US sanctions is to deprive Russia of revenues that are used to finance the war against Ukraine. In this context, control over “Lukoil“ is a key element of Bulgaria's commitment to its allies.
Hristov announced that the UDF would support Budget 2026 on both the first and second votes, but did not hide his reservations about the increase in dividend tax - according to him, lower taxes lead to higher collection, as well as about the increase in pension contributions by 2%. Hristov indicated that there are doubts about whether the measure is necessary and effective. He expressed regret that the budget was not discussed in the National Tripartite Council.
Regarding the idea of a ceiling on bonuses in the state administration, Hristov said that he supports the introduction of such a mechanism.
„Borisov has committed to conducting a serious dialogue on the topic next year, and I believe that a ceiling is necessary“, emphasized the UDF chairman.
