Is there a solution to the garbage crisis in the capital?
The municipality and volunteers have joined forces in five districts. At the end of the month, garbage collection contracts expire in another six, and since the beginning of the new year in three more.
Will a permanent solution to the case be found so that chaos does not ensue and landscapes with overflowing bins are not observed for days on end?
There are currently five districts that are without a garbage collection company. Many volunteers are involved in the removal.
"Two weeks later, but the situation is still critical. Unfortunately, I cannot say that things have improved. Volunteers are helping, we have also engaged additional equipment. This helps, but the truth is that specialized equipment is needed", said Kristiyan Hristov - mayor of the "Poduyane" district on BNT.
"The situation is similar here. There are not enough trucks. I hope that with the introduction of new equipment, things will normalize", Georgi Iliev - mayor of the "Slatina" district.
Nadezhda Bobcheva - deputy mayor for ecology at the Sofia Municipality explained that new equipment is expected to be involved in the field in order to catch up on the backlog over the last two weeks. This week, the decision of the Sofia Municipality on a permanent solution to the garbage crisis will become clear.
Nikolai Nedelkov from the Sofia Inspectorate stated that there were violations mostly from commercial establishments that throw recyclable waste into gray containers.
Action has been taken by the inspectorate.
