Tsvetlin Yovchev: Bulgaria does not react to international threats - 1

Our state - as a system for protecting national security - does not react in any way to the ever-expanding international threats. Political turbulence does not allow Bulgaria to build a clear and unified position on what is happening both in the region and in a global aspect, especially with regard to NATO. This was said in an interview with "Focus" by the former Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Interior and Chairman of SANS Tsvetlin Yovchev.

"I am surprised that at the hearing, when the current acting Chairman of SANS was proposed, we did not hear any concept of how the Agency should be transformed, in accordance with the new conditions, as well as from his opinion that everything is fine and he does not expect anything. Excuse me, but to be satisfied with this situation and to say that you don't need anything else means not understanding the state of the security environment and the Agency's capabilities in this environment to protect national security,“ he said.

According to him, the long-standing political instability in Bulgaria is the reason for our country's inability to form a clear position.

“We are giving contradictory signals: we are joining the coalition of the willing in terms of supporting Ukraine, while at the same time joining the Peace Council initiative of US President Trump - something that is absolutely unclear and which is very possible that it will not receive the support of the main European countries in the EU. With this, we are giving mixed signals to our partners. And in these important processes that are coming, we may be sidelined. We may not remain in the core of the countries that are building policies. And this will be very risky for our country,“ Yovchev pointed out.

He assessed Bulgaria's entry into the eurozone as a positive step. However, according to him, our indecisive policy leads to our partners' hesitation and how they should view us.

According to Yovchev, at the moment our country must very actively work for our accession to strategic and diplomatic initiatives related to ever deeper integration into the EU and Bulgaria's support for all initiatives concerning the collective defense of the EU, because "at the moment the North Atlantic Treaty NATO is shaken in its entirety.

"The Atlantic relationship has been greatly weakened by President Trump's actions and this creates extremely risky threats to our national security," said the former Deputy Prime Minister.
