Mother Submits Death Certificate for Her Living Son to Yagoda Village Mayor - 1

On August 18, 2025, a 42-year-old woman presented a death certificate for her son, issued by a personal physician, to the Yagoda Village Mayor's Office.

According to Mayor Dimitar Atanasov to NOVA, the document was in order, and the mother seemed very upset. The doctor explained that the young man was in serious health and had died. In accordance with his legal obligations, the mayor issued a death certificate within the prescribed period.

Months later, however, the 22-year-old applied for a new ID card. It then became clear that he was listed in the registers as deceased.

The young man and his mother are from Sliven and had resided in England. It is currently unclear why the death certificate was requested. Attempts to speak with the GP who issued the document were unsuccessful. He stated that he would only provide explanations in court and with a lawyer.

"I have never had anything like this happen to me", commented the mayor of Yagoda, who learned about the case after being contacted by the institutions.

The prosecutor's office continues to collect evidence and question participants and witnesses in the case. The investigation must establish under what circumstances the false death certificate was issued and what the motives of the mother and son were.
