The 16-year-old swimmer who died today at the swimming complex in the Burgas residential area “Slaveykov“ had a severe headache for the last two days, his teammates revealed.
The boy was a 10th grader at the elite National Financial and Economic High School in Sofia. He was an excellent athlete – multiple state champion, one of the best competitors of the NSK “Olymp“.
He arrived in Burgas on Friday with his parents. Even then, he complained of an unusual headache, was examined, but nothing concerning was found.
This morning, during the warm-up for the third day of competition, he collapsed while in the water, eyewitnesses told Flagman.
“The coaches immediately pulled him out. Resuscitators came. For 50 minutes, they tried to help him, they took everyone out so they wouldn't witness what happened“, according to an eyewitness.
It is assumed that the boy died of a brain aneurysm, but an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause.
In the meantime, the international SHARKS Swimming Cup competition, in which 30 clubs and over 500 competitors participated, has been canceled.
