“Freedom is not given for free. It was won with much pain, with much blood and with much sadness“, said Metropolitan Cyprian.

In his words, the Bulgarian warriors who fell for liberation are a testament to love for one's neighbor and for one's homeland.

“Then, when a person lays down his life for his neighbor, he fulfills the will of God. Faith is what sustains us all“, he said.

The Metropolitan recalled the suffering of Bulgarian families who lost loved ones in the liberation struggles, as well as the sacrifice of the volunteers at Shipka and the Russian soldiers who participated in the war of 1877-1878.

The crypt of the temple-monument contains the bones of many fallen soldiers, and prayers are offered daily for the repose of their souls.

“Peace and prosperity require sacrifice. Bulgaria has it because we preserve our memory and honor our heroes“, the Bishop also said.
