From the beginning of 2026 to February 21, 80 people died in road accidents – an average of 1.5 per day, two more than in the same period in 2024. The data clearly shows that the measures of the government of Rosen Zhelyazkov are not working. This is stated in a statement by the Institute for Road Safety, sent to the media. The main „weapon“ of the government – control by average speed – turned out to be symbolic. Since its introduction on September 7th until the end of 2025, only 1,198 electronic tickets have been issued, or about 10 violators per day, instead of “thousands”, as promised in the propaganda.
In 2025, the Ministry of Interior registered a record 3,151,021 violations – an average of 8,630 per day, with fines of over BGN 300 million imposed. In practice, however, these huge figures do not affect road safety.
One month after taking office, the caretaker government has not taken corrective measures. This means that in 2026, Bulgaria will likely remain among the most dangerous countries in the EU for road traffic, despite the loud propaganda and promises of “strict control“.
