Ticks have woken up and are hungry. In spring and summer, they become more active and bite to get food. This was stated by infectious disease specialist Prof. Georgi Popov in the program “Live Day“ on Nova News.
Infectious diseases are socially significant. They exist, despite the wars. Covid-19 has proven it, he specified.
According to him, there is a zonal spread of tick-borne diseases. In our latitudes, Q fever is more common.
Prof. Georgi Popov warned that there is a type of tick that bites in winter as well. He said that this species is called exodesa, and he personally had already encountered a tick bite on March 8.
One of the most infected regions with ticks in Bulgaria is the Troyan Balkan – Troyan, Sevlievo. Ticks in these regions are the most infected. In Sofia, these are the Hunting Park, cemeteries - too. There is a risk of a tick falling from a tree and biting us, as well as from a bird, the infectious disease specialist explained.
Lyme disease is multifaceted and difficult to recognize. Very difficult to diagnose. A tick bite is almost always indistinguishable. People who experience early symptoms of Lyme disease are lucky. The redness is characteristic - erythema migrans. The symptoms are flu-like – fatigue, headache, said Prof. Popov.
The doctor warned us that when we go to the mountains, we should get tweezers from the pharmacy - a type of tick remover, which is used to remove ticks, because the time the parasite stays in the body also matters.
