Prof. Drumeva: The election of a new Supreme Judicial Council is a top priority - 1

Immediately after the election results were announced, in addition to the distribution of mandates, the main topic of the socio-political debate was how the composition of the Supreme Judicial Council and the Inspectorate, whose mandates have long expired, will be changed and what we can expect as a procedure for the election of a new prosecutor general. Will the topic of a new change to the Basic Law be raised? These topics were commented on by "Euronews Bulgaria" former constitutional judge Ms. Emilia Drumeva.

Former constitutional judge Prof. Emilia Drumeva described the situation in the judicial system as an “absurd anomaly“, which requires immediate legislative and personnel actions by the new parliament.

Prof. Drumeva stated that Borislav Sarafov's resignation from office was not a surprise, but rather a belated return to normality.

“This was an exercise in urgency. We all expected it. It was an absurd anomaly in the legal space and the resignation from this post with a long-expired term is an attempt to get the procedures back on track“, she commented.

According to her, the long stay of figures with expired mandates in key positions is a symptom of “the lowest possible level of democracy“ in our country, since the mandate is a basic instrument of the rule of law.

Prof. Drumeva emphasized that the most important task before the new National Assembly is the formation of a new Supreme Judicial Council (SJC). She supported the idea of attracting external experts - professors, lawyers and representatives of the academic community - in the process of selecting candidates for the parliamentary quota.
