Bulgaria is the second largest market for Greek ouzo in the world. However, we Bulgarians are not in the first place in terms of consumption of the drink. One country is ahead of us and that is Germany, bTV reported.
Only the Germans line up ahead of us and drink more of the traditional anise drink, reports the Greek news site To Vima.
And in Greece, ouzo remains the leading alcohol. The pure anise-flavored drink continues to rank first among all other Greek spirits in terms of export value and volume.
The results for the first half of 2024 show that ouzo makes up 59% of the first and 71% of the second share.
Compared to the first six months of 2023, data for the January-June period this year showed an increase of 7.3% and 3.6% in terms of value and quantity, respectively.
According to the latest Eurostat data, Germany remains the largest consumer of ouzo worldwide, accounting for 43 percent of Greek exports of this alcohol.
Bulgaria is the second largest market for Greek ouzo, absorbing 20.3% of export value and 16.5% of volume. Surprisingly, Iraq is in third place with 19.8 percent of Greek ouzo exports.
The Greek Federation of Spirits Producers (SEAOP) reports that 71.2% of all spirits produced in the country are exported, with the total value of exports (based on 2021 data) being just under 90 million .euro.
