The Bulgarian army has abandoned the purchase of second-hand submarines, as priorities have changed and in the end it was assessed that the funds for the vessels could be used in a much more expedient way. This became clear from the words of the Chief of Defense Admiral Emil Eftimov from the board of the frigate “Verni“.
Instead of submarines, Adm. Eftimov revealed that the state is considering the option of purchasing surface drones.
He nevertheless assured that the investment projects for the modernization of our Navy are going at full speed, recalling the construction of the two new multifunctional patrol ships, which are expected to begin sea trials at the end of this or the beginning of next year.
We cannot afford everything new, but we are working on other lines for second-hand ships, added Adm. Eftimov and specified that the ship they are currently on is second-hand.
In his words, this is an effective mechanism through which, with little money, we have the opportunity to acquire modern capabilities.
“These are small steps in several directions, but we are moving forward“, the Chief of Defense emphasized.
