The past 24 hours were very difficult. 236 fires broke out on the territory of Bulgaria. This was stated on the air of “Wake up” the director of the Directorate General for Fire Safety and Population Protection, Chief Commissioner Alexander Dzhartov.
“We have activated the Civil Protection Mechanism and today we expect 4 helicopters from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and France and two planes from Sweden are to arrive in our country this afternoon. Volunteers can contact the mayors of municipalities or contact the National Association of Volunteers in Bulgaria”, Dzhartov pointed out.
“The largest one is currently in the municipality of Strumyani - above Ilindentsi. Last night the fire grew uncontrollably and we had to evacuate the teams on site. The second largest in area is the one in Transko. The third is near the village of Lesovo. It is not yet under control, but there is no danger to the settlement. The fire has crossed our border with Turkey”, Dzhartov summarized the situation in the country.
He stressed that despite the intense situation, there is no information about injured people or those at risk at the moment. Unfortunately, the forecast for today is again for strong winds and high temperatures. This, according to the director of the DG “Fire Safety and Protection of the population”, will complicate the situation again.
According to him, the main cause of fires in our country is human negligence - faulty agricultural machinery and discarded unextinguished cigarette butts.
