From September, a phased introduction of a new type of control on the republican roads will begin in our country - measurement of average speed through the cameras of the TOLL system.
Initially, 12 sections with a total length of over 140 km will be covered, which will serve as a pilot stage for analyzing the effectiveness, announced on BTV the director of the national TOLL administration, Prof. Oleg Asenov.
They have been selected from sections with a high concentration of traffic accidents, for example Dolni Dubnik - Telish.
In total, the system is ready to cover 63 sections with a length of over 1200 km, with their certification being carried out in stages. The TOLL system cameras have already been certified by the Bulgarian Institute of Metrology and operate with astronomically adjusted time, which allows for the measurement of average speed.
In addition, they can detect other violations - driving in the emergency lane, not wearing a seat belt and using a phone while driving. “The cameras capture silhouettes, not faces - there is no facial recognition, so citizens' personal data is not affected“, emphasized Prof. Asenov.
He added that violations are registered only when the recognition security is above 80%, which is the practice in other European countries.
