The summer of 2025 will be marked as one of the driest – the average rainfall in the country is below 50% for the entire season. This was stated in the studio of “This Saturday and Sunday“ on bTV by climatologist Simeon Matev. According to him, the problem is that people and authorities are not adapting to the drought – water resources are not managed properly and that is where the problems with water scarcity come from.
“The problem is not only in the network. Water is being stolen. A matter of mentality – "Why should we water our garden and wash our car with drinking water when we can do it with water from a well or borehole," said Matev and explained that the rainfall during these days will not be enough to fill the fountains of Pleven residents, where the water crisis is most serious.
He explained that the so-called climatic summer ends in August and the climatic autumn begins on September 1. The climatologist added that this does not necessarily mean a sharp cold snap.
„Who knows what records there were in the summer, excluding the month of July, when we had 2 or 3 periods in which temperatures reached extreme values - in Montana they recorded 43.5 degrees Celsius. This summer was not the warmest, not even the second warmest. The last one, in 2024, was the warmest. The summer of 2012 was the second most abnormal,“ said the climatologist.
Matev said that the summer of 2024 was 3 degrees warmer. However, the summer of 2025 will be in the top 3. More intense precipitation is expected in November and December.
