How to Choose the Right Chandelier for Every Room - 1

A chandelier can be the visual centerpiece of a room, but only if its size, hanging height, and light are in line with the daily use of the space. When choosing, the best guide is not the photo in the catalog, but the actual arrangement of furniture and free lines of sight.

Liliana Alvarez's article in Amazing Architecture focuses on four main questions: how much space is available, how the room will be used, how the light will be distributed, and what the installation conditions are.

Size is determined by the furniture

In the dining room, the chandelier is centered above the table, not necessarily in the middle of the room. A light fixture with a diameter of about half to two-thirds the width of the table can be used as a starting point. However, the rule should be adjusted according to the shape of the table, the height of the ceiling and the visual weight of the model.

For example, with a more massive table and a high ceiling, a larger chandelier may look proportional, while in a small dining room a more compact structure with an open frame will add emphasis without dominating the furniture. In the living room, the size is taken into account for the seating area, and in the hallway - for the volume of the entrance space and the movement of the door.

Height affects comfort

With a ceiling height of about 2.44 meters, a chandelier above a dining table usually starts 76-91 centimeters above the countertop. This is a guideline, not a universal requirement. For higher ceilings or large luminaires, the height can be changed so that people are not dazzled and the chandelier does not block the view between the seated people.

In hallways and passage areas, there should be enough free space under the luminaire. It is especially important to check how the chandelier looks from the entrance door, from chairs and from common traffic areas.

Light is not just a matter of color

When buying, you should check the total luminous flux in lumens, the type of diffusion, possible glare and compatibility with a dimmer. Warm light often creates a more comfortable atmosphere in the living and dining room, but the color temperature should be coordinated with the other lamps in the room.

A chandelier is usually not enough as the only light source. Wall lamps, ceiling lamps, or portable lamps can illuminate corners, work surfaces, and decorative details, reducing harsh contrasts during different times of the day. In rooms with multiple uses, individual switches and dimmable lighting allow for more flexible use of space.

What to check before installation

  • Draw out the furniture layout and measure the ceiling.
  • Compare the diameter of the chandelier to the table or seating area.
  • Check the hanging height and visibility from doors and chairs.
  • Make sure the electrical box can handle the weight.
  • Check access for changing bulbs, cleaning, and dimmer compatibility.

It is important to evaluate the light fixture when it is on, not just when it is off. You need to see where the light falls, where shadows are formed, and whether the bulb is directly visible at eye level. If new wiring or additional structural support is required, installation must be performed by a qualified professional according to the manufacturer's instructions and applicable local requirements.
