They are building a 5-storey parking lot with hundreds of parking spaces in the center of Plovdiv - 1

The center of Plovdiv is about to get a new large parking lot and a significantly expanded pedestrian zone. The municipality's intentions for the development of the area around “4-ti Yanuari“ Street, the Old Town and the Kapana district were presented by the mayor of the city, Kostadin Dimitrov.

“The parking lot on “4-ti Yanuari” Street has about 100 spaces. The project envisages an expansion to 170-180 spaces. With further expansion of the territory, there will be an opportunity to build a parking lot for over 300 cars,” said Dimitrov.

He emphasized that in addition to the improved automobile infrastructure, the emphasis will also be on pedestrian access, especially in the context of the strategic importance of the area.

“We also have a project for underground access through Chifte Banya, which will provide a convenient connection to the Old Town and the Kapana district - something extremely important for pedestrian movement. On this side we will have the longest pedestrian zone in the city, which will be further extended”, he added.

Limiting car traffic in the central part by creating more spaces for pedestrians is envisaged in the municipality's plans.

“I think this is good news and I hope the municipal councilors will support us at the next session so that we have the opportunity to design a large, new, multi-storey parking lot near the Humanities High School, as well as the Old Town and Kapana”, the mayor added.

A similar project for a multi-storey parking lot has existed since the time of former mayor Ivan Totev in 2019. According to the plan at the time, the facility was supposed to have 5 floors and a capacity of 191 parking spaces. A direct connection to the underpass at Chifte Banya was also planned, where renovation works and the construction of elevators, video surveillance, new lighting, recreation areas, a restaurant and modern pavement were planned.

If the new project receives approval from the Municipal Council, it could mark the beginning of a significant transformation of the urban environment - with more amenities for both pedestrians and drivers.
