A young man ran over a dog sleeping on the street and ran away. The incident was captured by security cameras in the capital's "Razsadnika" neighborhood.
The footage was distributed on the Internet. The perpetrator is 29 years old. According to unofficial information, he is a doctor at the Military Medical Academy. He told the police that he ran over the dog after an involuntary maneuver.
Maya is the darling of the "Razsadnika" neighborhood. She lived in a house on "Pchinya" street.
"When I was pregnant, he accompanied me to the neighboring store. She was always by our side," said Evelin Petrova.
"I brought him home, bathed him, dried him, fed him. He never hurt me in any way", commented Iva Yonkova.
Yesterday morning, Maya was run over by a car in front of a garage. And a security camera shows that the driver makes no attempt to help the animal.
"He gets out to see how it is, sees what condition it is in and just keeps going. The sound we heard from the dog was really Maya crying," explained Evelin Petrova.
The dog has been taken to a veterinary clinic. But the doctors determined that his injuries were incompatible with life.
"The best solution was to euthanize him", said Tsvetan.
The people from the neighborhood waited for the driver to explain to them why he killed their pet.
"At first he said he didn't see it. When he saw the recording, he said he saw it, but he thought it was already dead and that's why he ran over the dog", explained Tsvetan.
"Yes, I deliberately ran over the dog. These are his words", commented Iva Yonkova.
"Tomorrow it could be a child. He could at least put him in the car, try to take him somewhere. And this is a doctor who is expected to help people and think the best for people. Both for people and animals," said Dimitar.
The Ministry of Interior did not confirm the information that the man is a doctor, but the Military Medical Academy said that they were notified of an incident with their employee. According to police data, he is 29 years old, a citizen of the Republic of North Macedonia. He has no criminal record.
"He does not deny, does not hide. He admits what happened. He explains that he unintentionally made a maneuver and passed through the dog. By which I mean that further work will be done with the perpetrator," said Commissioner Stanislava Todorova, deputy head of the 3rd Regional Police Department.
The case was reported to the prosecutor's office. And after the killing of the dog Maya, thousands signed a petition demanding stricter punishments for animal cruelty.
