Two serious road accidents at the same place in the Northern Tangent area in Sofia claimed two victims on the night before Monday. A pedestrian walking on the roadway and a police officer who came to the scene of the accident died.
The Traffic Police gave a briefing with details of what happened.
At around 01:40 this night, the police received a signal about a pedestrian being hit on the Northern Tangent by a heavy truck with a Serbian registration. The man, who was walking on the roadway for an unknown reason, was pronounced dead at the scene.
„Officers of the Traffic Police and the pre-trial investigation arrived at the scene and conducted an inspection. The Serbian driver's alcohol and drug tests were negative, and he was detained. To ensure the safety of this serious traffic accident, traffic had to be diverted, and about 2,000 meters from the scene, police officers diverted traffic to „Rozhen“ Blvd. at a traffic light. At around 04:20 in the morning, however, a BMW car drove at a very high speed and hit a stopped police car, causing the death of the police officer who was in the car, in the driver's seat, explained Commissioner Vladimir Ivanov, Deputy Head of the "Traffic Police" department.
The driver of the BMW was detained, tests were performed on him, which were negative for alcohol and drugs. At the moment, it is clear that the speed at which he was driving was very high, but it is still not known exactly what it was.
Pre-trial proceedings are underway in the case.
