A serious domestic violence case ended in bloodshed and an arrest in the town of Berkovitsa. A 23-year-old man was arrested after he attacked and hacked his 57-year-old father with an axe, the Montana Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior reported.
The incident occurred in their shared household after a serious family scandal.
According to official information from the police, the young man struck his father in the leg with an axe. The attack caused a deep cut and there are serious suspicions of a fracture. The injured parent was immediately transported by ambulance to the hospital in Montana, where he was admitted for treatment. At the moment, doctors assure that there is no immediate danger to his life.
The attacker has been arrested for a period of up to 24 hours. He has already been charged under Article 131 of the Criminal Code for causing bodily harm in the context of domestic violence.
The statistics of the Ministry of Interior for the region show a startling increase in domestic crimes. The Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior in Montana reported to the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA) that from the beginning of 2026 to the end of July alone, a total of 32 crimes committed in the context of domestic violence have been registered in the region. Of these, 23 cases are for bodily harm, six are for threats of murder, and three are related to failure to comply with orders for immediate protection. For comparison, throughout the past year, a total of 56 pre-trial proceedings for this type of aggression were initiated in Montana. The investigation into the current case in Berkovitsa continues under the supervision of the prosecutor's office.
