Capital police arrested a foreigner for telephone fraud of an elderly woman , reported the press center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, BNT reported. A large amount of money in levs, dollars and euros was seized. The elderly woman became a victim of the well-known "assistance to the police" scheme.
At 7:00 p.m. last night, a stranger introduced himself on the phone to the 74-year-old woman as the chief of the "Criminal Police" and asked to provide him with the money at his disposal to help prevent a serious criminal offence. The woman did not doubt and left her handbag with BGN 3,500, USD 17,000 and EUR 5,000 in front of the front door of the cooperative where she lives.
After receiving information in the capital directorate, officers from the Second and First RU took immediate police action. A 23-year-old young man from North Macedonia was soon identified and detained in the area of the Central Bus Station. During the search, the duped woman's handbag was found in his possession along with a large sum in levs, US dollars and euros, as well as a ball of amphetamine.
The 23-year-old foreigner was detained with a police measure for up to 24 hours. A pre-trial proceeding has been initiated. A report on the materials is pending in the Sofia District Prosecutor's Office.
