Police report increase in home burglaries in Sofia, reports the Bulgarian National Radio.
In the days around Christmas and New Year, thieves become more active due to the large number of people traveling and empty homes in the capital.
How to avoid becoming a victim of this type of crime?
The Sofia Police explain that in recent years there has been no serious increase in this type of crime, but it remains among the main ones. Elena Krasteva from the Sofia Police commented:
"A slight increase in home burglaries. For this year, I can say in general that the level of home burglaries is the same as it was last year… When people leave their homes, they usually post or take pictures on social networks that they are not at home, which actually gives thieves an additional priority to commit these thefts".
The organization among thieves is complex and well-developed, the Ministry of Interior also explained:
"The valuable items are jewelry, gold, silver. Laptops, phones, we notice that there is a decrease in these thefts".
The Metropolitan Police also give specific advice to Sofia residents on how to avoid becoming victims of thieves during the holidays.
"They should not store items and funds that are the subject of such thefts in their homes, and should warn their loved ones and relatives that they will be away so that someone can watch over their home".
