A man was attacked by a large crocodile in northwestern Australia, but managed to escape after fighting off the predator, ABC reported.
According to the ABC, the incident occurred in the Kimberley region near the city of Broome, located on the northwestern coast of the country. The crocodile attacked the man at a popular campsite on the Dampier Peninsula.
According to conservation officials, the victim managed to escape by hitting the animal hard on the head, but suffered serious injuries. He was later airlifted to the Royal Perth Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and noted that saltwater crocodiles, which pose a serious threat to humans, inhabit northern Australia, including the Kimberley region.
The region has seen an increase in such incidents in recent months. In January, a man suffered lacerations after being attacked by a three-metre crocodile on the same peninsula.
