On the sixth day of Bright Week after Easter, Orthodox Christians celebrate Bright Saturday.

According to the church calendar, St. John the Baptist is honored. St. John the Baptist, also known as St. John the Forerunner, is the cousin and predecessor of Jesus Christ.

According to the Gospel, it was John who predicted the coming of the Messiah (Christ). This also explains the honor given to him in Holy Week after Easter.

Since Saturday is dedicated to the dead, people distribute prosphora and red eggs in memory of recently deceased loved ones, BGNES agency notes.

The first week after Easter is called Bright Week, because the resurrection of Jesus Christ brings enlightenment and hope for eternal life to all people.

The week ends with Thomas Sunday, in the name of St. Ap. Thomas, who was the only one of the twelve apostles of Jesus who did not believe in Christ's resurrection.
