Today we honor the memory of all doctors, medical nurses, policemen, volunteers and citizens who died while saving human life.
„The Day of Salvation” was established in 2005 on the initiative of Dr. Totko Naydenov, editor-in-chief of "Bulgarian Doctor", with the support of the Military Medical Academy and with the assistance of the Ministry of Health, the Bulgarian Medical Union, the Bulgarian Red Cross and the trade unions, in honor and memory of 26-year-old Dr. Stefan Cherkezov, who on 15/08/1963 saved 47 people from a burning bus and died from his severe burns.
The names of over 130 doctors and 20 nurses who died on the job are known, mostly after performing severe midnight operations, accidents with ambulances, as well as after contracting the diseases of their patients.
The lists also include policemen, mine rescuers and ordinary citizens who lost their lives saving other people. After the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the names of more than 120 doctors, nurses, paramedics and ambulance drivers were added to the blacklists, who until the end helped patients with the coronavirus, but lost the battle for their own lives.
